Flowers of Dakar

2022 · Photography, video, audio · Dakar, Senegal

The Flowers of Dakar is a multidisciplinary portrait project celebrating the queer communities of Dakar, Senegal — while keeping their identities completely anonymous.

Subjects hold flowers over their faces, preserving anonymity while asserting presence. The gesture is both protective and defiant: a refusal to disappear, and a refusal to be exposed. The photographs are edited to feel closer to painting than documentation — saturated, textured, and surreal.

Accompanying video interviews capture the subjects speaking in French, with English translation, their voices pitch-altered to protect their identities. What emerges is not testimony but intimacy — ordinary people describing their lives with extraordinary candor, shielded by sound.
